Gilan province now Iran’s silk production hub

Gilan - The northern province of Gilan produced some 406 tons of fresh silk cocoons this year, resulting in an estimated 65 tons of raw silk, according to the head of the provincial Agriculture Organization.

Saleh Mohammadi said 10,870 boxes of silkworm eggs were distributed to farmers at a regulated price of 400,000 rials per box under a decision by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Pricing Council.

He noted that Gilan’s humid climate and long tradition in sericulture make it one of Iran’s leading silk-producing regions.

Mohammadi highlighted the sector’s contribution to rural livelihoods, stressing that sericulture generates income and employment, particularly for women and small-scale farmers.

“On average, each box of silkworm eggs yields about 37 kilograms of fresh cocoons, with one kilogram of raw silk produced from every six kilograms after processing.”
