Historical background

Walnut belongs to the Juglandaceae family, consisting of 7 genera and about 60 species, all of which are single-flowered and have single-flowered flowers. The genus Juglans has 21 species. The walnut distribution and cultivation zones are in all countries located in

temperate regions and mainly in the northern hemisphere, between latitude 30 to 50 degrees north. Iranian walnut has the scientific name of Juglans regia.

 

Major producing provinces of walnut:

Walnut orchards exist in most provinces of the country (29 provinces). The most important walnut producing provinces are Hamedan (18% of production), East Azarbaijan (10% of production) and Fars (7% of production), respectively.

 

 
 
Target countries of export markets of walnut:

Iran walnut is being exported to Iraq, Qatar, Afghanistan, Oman, Syria, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Kuwait, Jordan, UAE, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkmenistan.

 

 

Production rate

According to the census of 2019, the total production of walnut is about 260 thousand tons and the total area under cultivation of walnut is about 150 thousand hectares and its yield is about 2 tons per hectare.

 

Area under cultivation

The total area of ​​walnut gardens is 149806 hectares, more than 80% of which are water gardens.

 

Global production rank

 Iran is in third place with 6.5% of world production after China and the USA. China produces about 1.8 million tons (48% of world production) and the USA produces more than 600,000 tons (16% of world production) of walnuts.

 

Export rate

According to the Iranian customs statistics, about 1,700 tonnes of walnut, which was worth more than $ 6 million were exported in 2019.
