Public participation key to expanding Iran green cover

Tehran - The acting head of Iran's Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization stressed the critical role of public engagement in expanding the country's green spaces.

Ali Teymoori emphasized the importance of the "One Billion Trees" initiative, launched in response to the Leader's call for every Iranian to plant at least one tree annually, saying this ambitious campaign aims to enhance environmental quality by increasing green cover, improving air quality, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Significantly, the private sector has demonstrated strong support for this initiative, with over 120 million seedlings prepared for distribution this year, he added.

Iran's current per capita green space lags behind the global average, standing at 1,700 square meters compared to 5,200 square meters internationally.

Teymoori expressed optimism that through collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and the public, Iran can increase its per capita green space to 2,500 square meters by the end of the Seventh Development Plan.

To encourage public participation, the organization has made information readily available on its website

regarding tree donation locations, he said.

“Furthermore, suitable planting sites in natural areas are being actively publicized through various media channels, with a strong focus on radio and television.”
