Tehran – Probiotic and postbiotic research is becoming a key pillar of sustainable livestock and poultry production in Iran as global efforts to reduce antibiotic use and combat antimicrobial resistance intensify, an official said.

Sho’leh Qorbani, Head of the Biotechnology Research Department, said probiotics improve animal health by enhancing gut microbiota, strengthening immunity, and increasing feed efficiency. Current research focuses on identifying effective indigenous probiotic strains and evaluating their performance under farming conditions.

She added that postbiotics, stable bioactive compounds produced by beneficial microorganisms, offer promising applications in livestock and food production by extending shelf life, reducing waste, and supporting the development of functional foods.

According to Qorbani, expanding domestic probiotic and postbiotic technologies will help reduce antibiotic use and import dependence while improving livestock productivity, product quality, and national food security.
