Loreatan – The western province of Lorestan has emerged as a leading force in Iran's shallot industry, ranking third among provinces for production of this strategic crop, according to the head of the province's Agriculture Organization.

 

Namdar Sayyadi reported that 412 hectares across Lorestan are currently planted with shallots, yielding 2,700 tons of the product.

 

He highlighted the crop's substantial economic appeal for local farmers: each hectare generates over 12 billion Iranian rials (approximately $240,000) in revenue.

 

Sayyadi stressed the urgent need to shift cultivation patterns toward low-water crops. Shallot cultivation, he explained, offers a practical solution to water scarcity while making efficient use of rain-fed lands.

 

The official reaffirmed that expanding medicinal plants—with shallots taking top priority due to their competitive advantages—remains a cornerstone of the province's agricultural development strategy.
