Iranian scientists breed salt-tolerant alfalfa in decade-long food security drive
Isfahan – After ten years of targeted breeding research, Iranian scientists have developed a promising salt-tolerant alfalfa variety, a breakthrough poised to enhance forage production and strengthen national food security amid growing soil salinity challenges.
The new variety was derived from the native "Qarah Gozlu" ecotype, selected for its intrinsic resilience. Researchers at the Isfahan Agricultural Research Center carried out a rigorous multi-stage process, including single-plant selection, line purification, and screening of elite bulk genotypes, to isolate a strain capable of performing reliably under saline conditions.
Now in its final field trials at the Kabootarabad research station, the variety is set for official release next year. The initiative is being conducted in partnership with the Seed and Plant Improvement Institute.
Once commercialized, the salt-tolerant alfalfa is expected to improve productivity on marginal lands with poor soil and water quality, offering a sustainable boost to Iran's livestock sector and contributing to long-term agricultural resilience.
