Tehran – Iranian researchers have successfully developed commercial hybrid eggplant varieties, marking a major advancement in vegetable breeding.

 

The Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO) led the project through its Seed and Plant Improvement Institute, using a diallel cross method—a first for eggplant breeding in the country.

 

According to Mr. Bagheri, deputy of the Vegetables Research Department, the initiative evaluates the combining ability of pure lines to enable more precise selection of parent plants.

 

“This approach helps identify genetic potential and accelerate the development of high-performing hybrids.”

 

Bagheri noted that eggplant, a key vegetable crop, requires varieties with high yield, fruit uniformity, marketability, good taste, and environmental stress tolerance.

 

He expressed hope that the project will pave the way for new hybrid cultivars, boost productivity, and strengthen applied research in Iran's vegetable sector.
