Iran unveils two new Quinoa varieties to tackle climate stress, malnutrition
Tehran – Iranian researchers have introduced two new quinoa varieties, 'Tayyib' and 'Yaqeen', describing them as a scientific response to the country's water scarcity, soil salinity, and malnutrition in underprivileged areas.
Quinoa, often called "plant-based caviar" for its high nutritional value, is naturally resilient to environmental stress.
According to AREEO researcher Dr. Bagheri, the new varieties were bred for high yield, genetic purity, and hardiness. 'Tayyib' offers early maturation and strong resistance to lodging (collapse), making it ideal for mechanical harvesting. 'Yaqeen' serves a dual purpose (grain and forage) with enhanced salt tolerance.
Compared to existing cultivars, 'Tayyib' is projected to yield 700 kg more per hectare, while 'Yaqeen' yields 500 kg more. Both also feature improved saponin levels, simplifying processing for food manufacturers.
