Iran unveils five-year plan to boost rainfed agriculture
Tehran – Iran has launched a five-year strategy to quadruple the contribution of rainfed agriculture to national food production, raising its share from 10% to 40%, Deputy Agriculture Minister for Crop Production Majid Anjafi announced.
The plan aims to increase rainfed wheat production to 6 million metric tons, oilseed output to 600,000 metric tons, and forage production to 1 million metric tons, generating an estimated 65 trillion rials in added economic value, Anjafi said.
Although more than 60% of Iran's wheat fields are rainfed, they currently supply only about 30% of the country's wheat needs, he added.
The initiative will help reduce reliance on food imports by applying modern dryland farming practices.
