Iran unveils breakthrough method for Asian Sea Bass reproduction

Tehran – The South Iran Aquaculture Research Institute has announced a significant advancement in artificial reproduction of Asian sea bass, achieved through the use of slow-release synthetic hormone implants.

According to the institute’s director, researchers succeeded in dramatically improving breeding outcomes by applying injectable slow-release gonadotropin implants.

“This new generation of hormones provides a sustained release over 72 to 96 hours, which boosts fertilization rates, increases hatching success, and results in higher-quality larvae,” he said.

He explained that the Bandar Imam Khomeini Marine Fish Research Station first developed the core biotechnology for Asian sea bass reproduction in 2022. "Since then, researchers have partnered with multiple universities and knowledge-based companies on projects to enhance reproductive biotechnology, induce maturation, and develop sex-control techniques for the species."

The director emphasized that the latest achievement is the product of continuous efforts by the institute’s research team, supported by the University of Gilan and funded by the Iran Science Foundation under a joint research initiative.

The breakthrough, he said, paves the way for stronger domestic production and a more competitive future for this high-value aquaculture species.
