Iran to develop fisheries hubs in southern coasts to boost food security

Tehran – Iran is advancing a plan to establish specialized fisheries towns along its southern coastline, a move officials say will strengthen national food security, create sustainable jobs, and support export-driven economic growth.

Peyman Eskandari, CEO of the Agricultural Towns Corporation, outlined the initiative as a strategic effort to harness maritime resources for long-term domestic and economic benefits.

The project aims to enhance food self-sufficiency and increase non-oil exports, attract public and private investment while modernizing fishing practices, generate lasting employment opportunities in coastal and less developed regions, and expand aquaculture and marine production through public-private partnerships.

Eskandari emphasized that the development aligns with broader goals to reduce regional inequality, diversify the economy, and maximize the potential of Iran’s aquatic resources.

“The initiative also intends to introduce advanced fishing technologies and improve supply chain efficiency from catch to market.”
