Iran moves to privatize fishing ports
Tehran - The Iranian government has advanced its plan to privatize fishing port management, aiming to streamline operations, reduce state involvement, and empower local communities in managing marine resources.
According to Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO), the supervision program - launched in July 2025 - is nearing completion for the current year.
The next phase will include oversight of seven remaining ports in Mazandaran and Khuzestan, with new management contracts to be issued based on performance reviews.
Officials estimate that the initiative will generate and save over 150 billion tomans between mid-2024 and mid-2025. More than 300 new jobs have also been created through private sector partnerships, marking a key step toward a leaner, more participatory government structure.
