Tehran - Iran's Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center has introduced "Mohtasham," a new rainfed bread wheat variety tailored for cultivation in the country's warm and semi-warm drylands.

According to center head Mohammad Reza Al-Hosseini, the variety offers high and stable yields, strong resistance to drought and heat stress, good lodging resistance, tolerance to major wheat diseases, and excellent baking quality.

“Developed through years of collaborative research between the Dryland Agricultural Research Institute and several provincial centers—including Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Ardabil, Lorestan, Golestan, and Ilam—the variety aims to boost productivity and reduce production risks in rainfed systems.”

He stressed that introducing climate-adapted varieties is essential for enhancing rainfed efficiency, ensuring sustainable production, and optimizing soil and water resources. He added that such innovations are critical to food security and support the country's push toward knowledge-based agriculture.

The release also highlights the research capacity of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, whose scientists played a key role in evaluating and developing the new variety.
