Tehran – Farmers in Iran's northwestern Zanjan Province are increasingly planting improved high-yield bean varieties, boosting productivity in one of the country's leading bean-producing regions.

Shahrzad Ali-Akbar Zanjani, an agronomy expert at the Agricultural Organization of Zanjan Province, said the province is a major producer of pinto and red beans. Popular improved varieties now cultivated include Saleh and Kousha pinto beans, along with the Yaqut red bean.

Zanjan produced about 40,000 metric tons of beans last year, and output is expected to rise in 2026 as the cultivated area expands from 14,200 hectares to 14,700 hectares.

The province is also home to two certified bean seed producers, supplying improved varieties that help increase yields, improve quality, and reduce crop losses from disease.

According to the official, improved bean varieties can yield 3–3.5 metric tons per hectare, outperforming traditional local varieties and supporting higher farm productivity.
