Iran develops vaccine for new FMD strain

Tehran – The Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute has produced the vaccine seed for the SAT1 serotype 3 strain of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), enabling the supply of five million doses by January 2026, said the head of the institute’s FMD vaccine production department.

Seyed Mahmoud Azimi said that the SAT1 strain was identified and isolated for the first time in Iran after being detected in Tehran Province.

He said the Veterinary Organization estimates the national need for about five million doses, part of which will be produced immediately.

Despite challenges, Azimi stressed, the Razi Institute fulfilled its national duty by developing the new vaccine in record time. Once approved and mass-produced, it will be distributed to farmers to contain the outbreak and minimize losses.

He added that the institute remains at the forefront of animal disease prevention, relying on domestic scientific expertise to protect the country’s livestock.
