Iran boosts cereal exports amid domestic consumption rise

Tehran – Iran exported 91,000 tons of cereals in the past year, according to the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Iranian Cereal Association.

Davood Lapehchi put the annual consumption of cereals and legumes in Iran at between 950,000 tons and 1 million tons.

The head of the Cereal Association, Lapehchi, attributed the increased consumption to a rising population and changing dietary habits.

While Iran produced 650,000 to 700,000 tons of cereals domestically last year, production is expected to increase this year, he said.

Lapehchi also noted that Iran’s per capita cereal consumption is lower than the global average, suggesting potential for further market growth.

He further pointed out that about 50,000 tons of cereals were imported into the country in the first four months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21 to July 22, 2024).
