Tehran - Iran has secured the fourth spot globally in honey production, thanks to its thriving beekeeping industry, the deputy minister for livestock products affairs said.

 

Mohammad Ebrahim Hassannejad reported that according to the 2024 national census, Iranian beekeepers managed 10.8 million honeybee colonies across 92,122 apiaries, producing roughly 128,000 tons of honey.

 

This achievement places Iran fourth worldwide in both the number of colonies and honey output, according to the 2023 FAO statistics, he added.

 

Hassannejad highlighted that Iran’s beekeeping sector, fueled by domestic expertise and the tireless efforts of its beekeepers, plays a vital role in the country’s agricultural economy and food security.

 

He stressed that sustaining and enhancing this position requires precise monitoring and strategic planning.

 

“To support this goal, a nationwide apiary census will take place from 28 September to 8 October 2025, coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with provincial agricultural organizations and industry stakeholders. The data collected will inform sustainable development policies for the sector.”

 

He added that beekeeping is crucial not only for honey production but also for crop pollination and biodiversity preservation, making its promotion a top priority for the ministry.
