Iran backs nomadic herders to strengthen livestock production
Mazandaran – Iran is expanding support for nomadic herders in the northern Mazandaran province to boost livestock production, improve food security, and enhance the sustainability of the country's pastoral sector.
Hossein Negahdar, Deputy Head of Livestock Production in Mazandaran, said targeted investment in infrastructure, animal health, technical training, and grazing management would raise productivity and lower production costs.
Mazandaran is home to about 5,400 nomadic households managing 2.4 million livestock, while nationwide, Iran’s nomadic communities own 25% of the country’s livestock and produce around 200,000 tons of red meat annually.
Officials say strengthening support for nomadic herders is key to increasing domestic meat production and preserving Iran’s traditional livestock systems.
