Iran advances nano-bubble tech to bolster aquaculture food security
Markazi - Authorities in Markazi Province in the center of Iran are intensifying efforts to deploy nano-bubble technology in aquaculture, describing it as a key instrument for strengthening national food security and reducing reliance on imported animal feed inputs.
Hassan Akbari, Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Affairs at the provincial Agriculture Organization, said nano-bubble systems represent a strategic innovation for the aquaculture sector. By elevating dissolved oxygen levels in water, the technology supports faster fish growth, lowers mortality rates, improves feed conversion ratios, and reduces overall production costs.
He said the adoption of such technologies is essential for decreasing dependence on imported feed components and advancing domestic protein self-sufficiency.
The official cited statistical data indicating that Iran’s reliance on grain imports has risen markedly over the past two decades, from 18.1 percent to 43.1 percent, while the annual cost of importing critical inputs such as feed corn and soybeans exceeds $5 billion.
He emphasized that productivity gains enabled by nano-bubble aeration could help insulate the country’s protein supply chain from external shocks and exchange-rate volatility, while contributing to improved food quality.
According to Akbari, incremental improvements in fish production directly reinforce the three principal pillars of food security, availability, access, and supply stability.
He described nano-bubble technology as a scalable model for sustainable aquaculture development consistent with broader national economic resilience objectives.
Markazi Province occupies a significant position in Iran’s agricultural economy, producing roughly 54,000 tons of poultry meat, 53,000 tons of red meat, 320,000 tons of milk, and approximately 41,000 tons of eggs annually.
