Iran Veterinary Organization oversees 18m tons of animal products annually
Tehran - The head of Iran’s Veterinary Organization announced that roughly 18 million tons of animal products - including red meat, poultry, eggs, milk, honey, and seafood - are produced each year under strict veterinary supervision to ensure their safety and quality.
Alireza Rafieepour further noted that the Ministry of Agriculture is tasked with guaranteeing food security, while the Veterinary Organization specifically protects the health of raw animal protein products, monitoring them from production to delivery.
He highlighted the daily efforts of veterinary teams nationwide, reporting that more than 7,500 tons of poultry, 36,000 small ruminants, and 4,800 large livestock are processed in monitored facilities each day, resulting in over 1,700 tons of fresh red meat and poultry supplied to markets.
“Tehran alone receives about 1,500 tons of poultry daily, while national reserves include 12,000 tons of beef and veal, 6,000 tons of lamb, 64,000 tons of poultry, and 700 tons of buffalo meat kept in cold storage to stabilize prices when needed.”
Noting that the country’s current production levels support per capita annual consumption of 10–12 kilograms of red meat, 33–35 kilograms of poultry, 14–15 kilograms of eggs, 109–120 kilograms of milk and dairy products, and 1–1.5 kilograms of honey, the deputy minister said that to maintain these supplies safely, more than 30 million doses of vaccines for livestock, poultry, and aquatic species are administered daily, preventing disease outbreaks during high-risk seasons.
He praised the commitment of veterinarians, whose preventive efforts protect Iran’s livestock, poultry, aquaculture, and beekeeping sectors from costly losses.
Rafieipour also reported the issuance of millions of sanitary transport permits for livestock, poultry, aquatic species, honeybees, and silkworms each year. These permits, he explained, not only ensure safe domestic transportation but also strengthen Iran’s ability to export animal products, enhancing the economic vitality of the country’s livestock industry.
