Tehran – The Iran Organic Association has called on the government to require Non-GMO certification, full traceability, and rigorous safety oversight for imported agricultural commodities, arguing that food safety should remain a key consideration in future trade agreements.

 

In a statement issued amid discussions over potential expansion of Iran's international trade, the association urged authorities to make imports of wheat, corn, soybeans, and other agricultural products contingent on valid Non-GMO certification and transparent supply chains.

 

While supporting efforts to strengthen food security and reduce production costs, the association said public health, environmental protection, biodiversity, and consumer rights must be safeguarded in all trade arrangements.

 

The statement noted that genetically modified crops account for a significant share of global corn and soybean production and that many countries have adopted strict regulations on GMO production, imports, and labeling. Citing the precautionary principle, the association argued that where long-term scientific uncertainties remain, policymakers should prioritize caution and ensure consumers have access to products with verified origins.

 

The association also emphasized Iran's potential to expand sustainable agriculture and the production of organic and non-GMO crops, calling for import policies that support these long-term national objectives.
