Iran, Spain working on joint venture on tropical fruit greenhouse

Rudan– Construction has begun on a 15-hectare tropical fruit greenhouse in Rudan County, Hormozgan Province, as part of a joint venture between Iran and Spanish agribusiness firm Ininsa.

Masoud Gorgij, Deputy Director for Crop Production Improvement at the Hormozgan Agriculture Organization, said the 700-billion-rial (about USD 14 million) project will cultivate high-value tropical fruits including mango, avocado, and dragon fruit.

The initiative is designed to cut annual tropical fruit imports, which currently cost Iran an estimated USD 500 million, and move the country toward self-sufficiency in producing these crops.

Agricultural officials say the project could serve as a model for similar partnerships aimed at boosting domestic production while reducing reliance on imports.
