Hormozgan - With nearly 20,000 camels and more than 3,200 active breeders, Hormozgan southern Province has emerged as one of Iran’s leading centers for camel husbandry, playing a vital role in supplying camel meat to markets across the country.

 

Hamid Amiqi, Director of Livestock Affairs at the Hormozgan Agricultural Organization, said the province ranks third nationwide in camel production and has become a key supplier to neighboring regions due to its favorable climate and growing market demand.

 

He noted that camel breeding has evolved from a traditional livelihood into a highly profitable agricultural enterprise, supported by strong demand for camel meat and other products.

 

According to Amiqi, around 1,000 camels are transported annually from Hormozgan to the provinces of Yazd, Kerman, Fars, South Khorasan, and Isfahan, highlighting the province’s strategic role in the national livestock supply chain.

 

He emphasized that camels are particularly well-suited to arid environments and recurring drought conditions, while generating substantial value through products such as meat, milk, and hides, all of which enjoy stable market demand.

 

Amiqi also pointed to the adoption of advanced livestock management technologies in the province. Last year, a pilot project introduced solar-powered GPS tracking devices for camels at a livestock unit in Bandar Abbas. The technology is expected to improve herd monitoring, reduce camel-related road accidents, and enhance public safety, with broader deployment planned pending funding and producer interest.
