Chabahar achieves breakthrough in domestic pineapple production

Chabahar - Iran has successfully localized pineapple cultivation in Chabahar, with tissue-cultured plants developed in Southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan reaching the fruiting stage, marking a major step toward commercial production.

Khaled Miri, head of the Baluchestan Agricultural Research and Natural Resources Center, said the achievement follows more than five years of research carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Horticultural Research Institute.

To reduce dependence on imported planting material, local researchers began propagating pineapple through tissue culture three years ago. The domestically produced plants have now successfully completed their growth cycle and entered flowering and fruiting stages under local conditions.

The milestone confirms the crop’s strong adaptability to Chabahar’s climate and highlights the region’s potential as a hub for high-value tropical fruit production. Officials also noted that cultivating pineapple under low-cost shade structures provides a competitive and cost-effective alternative to greenhouse farming.
