Cage fish farming a new engine for Ilam economy

Ilam - The Director-General of Ilam Province Fisheries said that the Seimareh Dam, with its stable water resources, suitable temperatures, and natural ecosystem, has the capacity to produce 4,000 tons of fish per year, a capacity that can play a significant role in the region’s economic development and job creation, positioning Ilam as one of the country’s fisheries hubs.

Reza Soleimani added that, for the first time in the country, a pilot project for cultivating phytophagous fish in floating cages at the Seymareh Dam has begun with the experimental farming of 5,000 fish, and initial results have been encouraging.

With its high water capacity and suitable geographic conditions, the Seymareh Dam has become one of the country’s emerging centers for cage fish farming. Seimare Dam, also known as Hini Mini or spelled Seymareh, is an arch dam on the Seimare River in Badreh County, Ilam Province.

He highlighted the characteristics of phytophagous fish, noting that this warm-water species from the carp family feeds on plant materials and does not require manual feed , making it an economical, low-cost, and environmentally friendly option.

With 265 active farms and an annual production of nearly 12,000 tons of various fish species, Ilam’s fisheries development program has become a new pillar of the province’s economy and a national model in the efficient use of water resources.
