AREEO research institute achieves breakthrough in Banana tissue culture

Tehran – Researchers at the Date Palm and Tropical Fruits Research Institute, part of AREEO, have successfully produced tissue-cultured seedlings of the globally popular Grand Nain (G9) banana variety under greenhouse conditions.

Boroujerdnia, a faculty member at the institute, led the effort. Evaluations of the seedlings reveal uniform growth, excellent performance, and robust health—marking a major step toward providing disease-free, uniform, and high-yield planting material for Iranian banana growers.

The researcher highlighted the advantages of tissue culture technology and said, “It dramatically reduces the risk of pest and disease transmission, ensures growth uniformity, simplifies greenhouse management, and ultimately enhances productivity.”

According to Boroujerdnia, the successful establishment and growth of these seedlings offers a promising outlook for commercial cultivation of the G9 variety in suitable regions of Iran. “Grand Nain is recognized worldwide as a premium banana variety, prized for its high yield, superior fruit quality, uniform growth, and strong market appeal.”

The use of tissue culture enables mass production of seedlings with stable genetic quality, optimal health, and complete uniformity—a valuable achievement by AREEO scientists in support of knowledge-based agriculture and sustainable food security in Iran.
