AREEO leads innovative olive pest control effort in Semnan

Semnan - The Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO) has successfully spearheaded a field operation to combat the destructive olive psylla pest in Semnan province, located in northern Iran, showcasing its ability to bridge research and practical agricultural solutions.

In collaboration with the Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection, AREEO carried out the project at the Semnan Natural Resources and Animal Affairs Research Station, according to a report carried by the official website of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The initiative focused on applying scientific methods to protect olive orchards from the pest, which poses a serious threat to production.

Researchers conducted targeted spraying using Malathion insecticide to suppress olive psylla populations effectively. The choice of Malathion reflects a balanced approach, prioritizing efficacy while minimizing environmental impact due to the compound's short persistence in nature, the report said.

“The operation addresses a critical challenge for local orchard owners and supports the production of healthy, high-quality olives. It also underscores AREEO’s role in mobilizing scientific expertise to tackle real-world agricultural problems and advance sustainable development goals.”
