Golestan - The head of the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center of Golestan northern province has announced the introduction of 15 new seed varieties, developed after years of research by scientists at the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO).

 

Ghorban-Ali Roshani, head of the center, made the announcement during a visit to seed production fields at the Araghi Mahalleh Agricultural Research Station in Gorgan.

 

Highlighting the role of AREEO researchers in developing new crop varieties, Roshani explained that producing each new seed variety requires 10 to 12 years of continuous research. After undergoing evaluation, field trials, and obtaining the necessary certifications, the varieties are introduced to the production sector.

 

According to him, the newly introduced varieties will be available to farmers for production and utilization by the end of 1405.

 

Roshani also reported that 160 national, provincial, and commissioned research projects are being carried out this year. He added that last year, researchers introduced 12 new crop varieties, including one wheat variety, one barley variety, four mung bean varieties, two forage varieties, one soybean variety, and several others.

 

He emphasized that, on average, 12 to 15 new crop varieties are introduced annually by AREEO research centers. Featuring traits such as resistance to environmental stresses—including drought and salinity—higher yields, better quality, and lower input requirements, these varieties play a key role in enhancing production sustainability, improving productivity, and strengthening agricultural self-sufficiency in Iran.
