Tehran – Iran has made substantial strides in potato seed production, with domestic companies now producing a substantial quantity of certified mini-tubers, according to the deputy of the Seed Registration and Certification Research Institute.


Over 33 million mini-tubers are produced annually by 14 Plant Tissue Culture Companies across the country, Samad Mobasser said.


“Following rigorous quality checks, nearly 29 million of these mini-tubers receive certification.”


He further said that approximately 100 hectares of land are dedicated to cultivating potato seeds using these mini-tubers, highlighting the significant advantages of using domestic mini-tubers for seed production.


"It is estimated that potato tuber infections caused by viruses, bacteria, and fungi can reduce yields and market value by up to 50%," Mobasser explained. "Therefore, producing disease-free tubers from the beginning of the certified seed potato production cycle and subsequent controlled multiplications is the most critical strategy for producing certified potato seed in the country."


This achievement marks a significant milestone for Iran's agricultural sector, as it not only ensures a reliable supply of high-quality potato seeds domestically but also opens up opportunities for exports. The production of certified mini-tubers contributes to increased agricultural productivity, reduced reliance on imported seeds, and enhanced food security.
