Sorghum forage gains strategic importance in Sistan and Baluchestan

Sistan - Sorghum, a drought- and heat-tolerant forage crop, is increasingly being adopted by farmers in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan due to its strong adaptability to extreme climatic conditions, according to a report.

“It has become an important component in securing livestock feed supplies in the region. Harvesting of sorghum forage has begun in farms across Hirmand County, where it is regarded as one of the most important seasonal fodder crops,” the report carried by the official website of the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Thanks to its high resistance to heat, water scarcity, and soil salinity, sorghum is considered a strategic crop for animal feed production in Sistan. Sistan and Baluchestan Province is also recognized as one of the country’s key hubs for forage production.

Its low water requirements and resilience to harsh temperatures make it particularly suitable for cultivation in Hirmand, where it plays a significant role in supporting livestock farming and improving feed security, it added.

Overall, sorghum forage is emerging as a vital crop for arid and semi-arid regions, offering a practical solution for sustainable livestock production under climate stress.
