Iranian researchers develop smart system to monitor turkey egg-laying behavior
East Azarbaijan - Researchers in Iran’s East Azarbaijan province have developed a smart system to monitor turkey egg-laying behavior, improve individual bird identification and boost egg production while reducing stress-related behavior.
Farhad Parnian, head of the Animal Science Research Department at the East Azarbaijan Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Centre, said the new technology builds on an earlier smart nesting system developed by the center and registered as a commercializable technology by the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO).
The system offers two key improvements: reducing broodiness to increase egg production and preventing multiple turkeys from occupying a nesting space simultaneously, thereby improving individual identification and production records.
Using radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, the platform automatically identifies each turkey and records its arrival time, body weight and the weight of each egg laid.
Parnian said the technology would help improve production efficiency and enable more precise management and monitoring of turkey egg-laying behavior.
