Iranian researchers develop seed vaccine for bacterial fish diseases

Ahvaz – The head of the South Inland Aquatic Research Institute in Ahvaz announced that the institute’s researchers have successfully carried out out-of-season breeding of common carp and developed a seed vaccine to combat bacterial diseases in fish.

These achievements will help move Iran’s aquaculture industry toward greater self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports, Hossein Hooshmand said.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Iranian Fisheries Science Research Institute, he noted that marine fish breeding centers in Hormozgan and Khuzestan provinces are currently operating on a pilot scale using broodstock provided by the institute.

Hooshmand highlighted the innovative nature of the project, explaining, “While the natural spawning season for common carp occurs in late winter and early spring, we succeeded in inducing breeding during the autumn months.”

He added that Khuzestan Province, with over 14,000 hectares of carp farming ponds and an annual production of around 64,000 tons, remains one of Iran’s key centers for warm-water fish farming.
