Iranian fishermen caught over 20,000 tons of tiny Kilka fish (Caspian Sea sprat) from the Caspian Sea in the past fishing season (ended on March, 19, 2024), an official with Iran’s Fishery Organization said.
“Last fishing season, a total of 20,360 tons of kilka were caught in the northern provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran, showing a 12 percent decline compared to the same period last year,” Reza Abbaspour Naderi said recently.
511 tons of the total amount belongs to Mazandaran province, and 332 tons goes to Gilan province, he added.
“This year, 73 fishing vessels were engaged in catching Kilka fish. Of these, 44 vessels operated in Mazandaran Province and 29 in Gilan Province. According to statistics, Kilka fish catch in Mazandaran waters has increased by 10% compared to last year, while in Gilan waters, the increase is 3%,” Abbaspour said.
