Iran to use tropical plant waste to feed livestock

The Director General of the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Technology Office at the Ministry of Agriculture has announced plans to utilize the waste and biomass of harvested tropical plants as livestock feed.
Visiting banana farms in Zarabad County, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Abolfazl Raoufi emphasized that this initiative is part of a phased research and operational program to ensure a sustainable food source for livestock.
He highlighted the significance of waste management in sustainable development and environmental protection, explaining that waste management should focus on reducing waste, reusing materials, recycling, and recovering energy.
Given the recent droughts and fodder shortages, Raoufi stressed the importance of using agricultural waste to feed livestock.
He said that this approach not only provides a sustainable food source for the livestock industry but also creates job opportunities, adds value to banana plantations, and reduces the amount of hazardous waste in the environment and coastal areas. “Additionally, it helps to minimize the growth of harmful microbes, pathogens, and pests in the waste around the plantations.”
