Iran strengthens pest management, plant quarantine to boost food security
Tehran – Iran is advancing integrated pest management and enhancing plant quarantine systems as part of efforts to safeguard agricultural production, strengthen food security and expand agricultural exports, according to the head of the Plant Protection Organization (PPO).
Speaking during Agriculture Week, Jalili-Moqaddam said the organization is addressing key challenges facing the agricultural sector, including climate change, emerging pests, limited production resources and growing international trade.
She noted that the PPO has prioritized integrated pest management, biological control methods, targeted pesticide use, and advanced monitoring and early-warning systems to reduce crop losses and improve production sustainability.
Jalili-Moqaddam also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen plant quarantine measures, prevent the spread of harmful pests and ensure compliance with international phytosanitary standards.
She added that the organization is expanding technical cooperation with trading partners, conducting pest risk assessments, developing export protocols and streamlining the issuance of phytosanitary certificates to facilitate agricultural exports and improve market access.
