Iran speeds up aquaculture development along southern coasts

Bandar Abbas - Iran is rapidly expanding aquaculture projects along its southern coastal provinces, including Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Sistan-Baluchestan, the head of the Iran Fisheries Organization announced during a visit to a 400-hectare shrimp farm in Bandar Abbas, a port city bounded by the Persian Gulf.

Hamzeh Rostampour, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Director of the Fisheries Organization, highlighted the sector’s critical role in national food security, noting that Iran aims for aquaculture to provide a major share of household protein in the future.

He praised the shrimp farm as a model of smart resource utilization, turning previously unproductive land into a hub for wealth creation and employment.

Mohsen Yektapour, head of Hormozgan’s Agricultural Organization, added that the southern province, with over 1,000 kilometers of coastline, favorable climate, and robust infrastructure, has the potential to become a regional aquaculture hub.

He emphasized the nutritional and economic benefits of aquaculture, noting that seafood, high in protein and healthy fats, offers a cost-effective alternative to red meat and strengthens food security nationwide.
