Iran produces 11m tons of livestock feed amidst rising imports

Iran produced over 11 million tons of livestock feed last year, according to the head of the Iran Feed Industry Association; however, the industry is grappling with rising import costs, with a significant increase in imports of key feed components like corn, soybean meal, and barley.
Majid Movafegh Ghadiri, speaking at the opening of the 23rd International Exhibition of Poultry, Livestock, and Related Industries (IRAN PLEX 2024), highlighted the industry's heavy reliance on foreign inputs, with over 80% of feed components sourced from abroad.
The exhibition, which runs until July 23, aims to showcase the latest advancements in the livestock and poultry sectors. It features both domestic and international participants, with a strong European presence.
Ghadiri emphasized the importance of the exhibition in addressing industry challenges and promoting sustainable practices. He announced the unveiling of a competitiveness promotion system for the aquatic industry and a five-year animal feed program.
With 39 ambassadors and 11 trade delegations in attendance, including representatives from China, Turkey, and Russia, the event is expected to foster international cooperation and explore new business opportunities.
