Tehran – Iran's greenhouse sector is poised for substantial growth, with the country targeting a staggering output of over 3.7 million tons of high-quality greenhouse products by March 2025, a senior official said. 

According to Elham Fatahi-Far, head of the Agriculture Ministry's Greenhouse Bureau, Iranian greenhouses have already made significant strides, exporting a remarkable 240,000 tons of products valued at $150 million in the first four months of the current year. 

“To sustain this momentum, the government is actively working to ensure a steady supply of essential inputs, including seeds, fertilizers, and growing mediums, to support the expanding greenhouse industry,” she said. 

The nation's total greenhouse area currently stands at 27,000 hectares, with an additional 8,761 hectares under construction, the official said, adding that rach hectare of greenhouse development is anticipated to generate direct employment for approximately 10 individuals, while indirectly supporting twice that number of jobs.

“The Agriculture Ministry has set an even more ambitious long-term objective of increasing greenhouse output to a remarkable 10 million tons by 2027. To achieve this ambitious target, the ministry has identified 30,520 hectares of land suitable for greenhouse development. However, realizing this vision will necessitate substantial investments, estimated at 7.3 quadrillion rials (approximately $14.6 billion).”  

Iran has made significant strides in greenhouse technology and is now actively exporting its expertise to other countries. The country's greenhouse cultivation area has already reached an impressive 23,000 hectares.
