Bushehr turning into Iran’s leading producer of farmed shrimp, algae

Bushehr – The southern Bushehr province has reaffirmed its status as Iran’s top hub for farmed shrimp and algae production, according to the director general of the province’s Fisheries Department.

“So far this year, Bushehr has produced 90 tons of algae and 12,000 tons of farmed shrimp,” Aqil Amini said.

He highlighted the province’s strategic advantages, including its extensive Persian Gulf coastline and a vibrant fishing sector of more than 12,000 fishermen across 28 piers, noting that Bushehr currently has 7,650 hectares of fully prepared land for aquaculture and another 5,000 hectares under development, cementing its leadership in shrimp farming.

“In 2022, Bushehr set a national record with shrimp output surpassing 38,000 tons.”

Amini also pointed to strong performance in hatchery production. With 23 shrimp hatcheries, the province has the capacity to produce 3 billion post-larvae annually. This year alone, 2.416 billion larvae have been stocked in local shrimp farms.

Under Iran’s Seventh Development Plan, Bushehr is targeting the production of 20,000 tons of cage-farmed fish along its Persian Gulf shores.
