Bushehr leads Iran in spirulina production

Bushehr – The southern Bushehr province has emerged as Iran's leading producer of spirulina, marking a major step forward in the development of modern, knowledge-based aquaculture.

Provincial officials recently visited a spirulina microalgae cultivation unit in the village of Ashkali, Tangestan County, to assess its operations, development plans, and challenges.

Aqil Amini, Director-General of Bushehr's Fisheries Department, stated that diversifying aquaculture toward high-value-added species is a strategic priority for the province.

He noted that spirulina cultivation offers strong productivity, low water requirements, and growing demand across the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries — making it a valuable engine for local economic growth and sustainable job creation.

Bushehr's climate is particularly well-suited for microalgae farming, Amini added. The department is actively supporting investors by streamlining administrative processes and ensuring compliance with technical and health standards.

“Looking ahead, key priorities include completing the value chain, developing specialized processing and packaging, and targeting export markets.”

At the conclusion of the visit, officials reaffirmed their commitment to continued technical and executive support for pioneering aquaculture projects across the province.
