Iran annual organic horticulture output stands at 55,000 tons

Tehran – Iran's agricultural sector is making strides in organic production, according to a senior official.
Deputy Agriculture Minister Mohammad Mehdi Boroumandi said Iranian farms produce approximately 55,000 tons of organic horticultural products annually.

While this figure represents a significant contribution to the country's organic agriculture industry, it pales in comparison to the overall horticultural production of 26 million tons.

Boroumandi attributed this disparity to the unique conditions required for organic farming and the ongoing transition period.

The Iranian Agriculture Ministry is actively developing strategies to promote organic agriculture in the upcoming National Development Plan. Statistics indicate that horticultural products are cultivated on approximately 3.3 million hectares of land in Iran, accounting for 18% of the country's agricultural land.

Despite its global ranking of 79th in organic product production, Iran has the potential to climb to the top 20 countries in this sector. The country is already self-sufficient in producing most horticultural products, with the exception of four tropical fruits. Moreover, Iran exports horticultural products to over 200 countries worldwide.
