In Iran, more than 50,000 tons of municipal solid waste is
produced daily and over 80% is left in nature. The aim of this project was to
find a suitable and operational solution for management of the organic fraction
of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) in Iran. One of the basic solutions is using
anaerobic digestion systems.
With the interest and
follow-up of Isfahan Waste Management Organization, a project carried out with
the aim of optimizing biogas production in a plug flow semi-dry anaerobic
digester pilot plant with OFMSW as a specific contract.
This pilot is a semi-dry continuous plug-flow digester; with
700 L total volume, and 25-30 kg/day digestion capacity of OFMSW.
The amount of biogas production has reached an average of
5000 L/day from 27 kg of OFMSW (185 m3/tone), and according to the percentage
of methane (60 to 65%), the amount of methane produced 110 to 120 m3/tone
OFMSW.
The obtained results are consistent with the efficient
biogas plants from OFMSW in the world. It has proved that with appropriate
bioprocess engineering, OFMSW in Iran can be produced biogas and energy
economically. In addition, with development the anaerobic digester systems in
Iran, environmental pollutions of MSW will reduced significantly.
