Tehran - Rapid population growth, climate change, water scarcity, and expanding urbanization are placing mounting pressure on traditional food systems, positioning urban agriculture as an increasingly important response.

 

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) projects the global population will exceed 9 billion by 2050, with more than 70 percent living in cities.

 

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals emphasize local food production as essential to achieving sustainable cities and ending hunger.

 

Urban agriculture ranges from rooftop cultivation and use of vacant land to vertical farming and hydroponic and aquaponic systems. Analysts say these approaches shorten supply chains, reduce transport emissions, and strengthen resilience to disruptions such as pandemics and climate shocks. Experiences in countries such as Singapore and the Netherlands show that technology-driven urban farming can significantly boost local food supply and efficiency.

 

In Iran, population concentration in major cities alongside limits on water and farmland has heightened interest in urban agriculture. Experts say expanding smart greenhouses, enabling rooftop gardens, and supporting urban farming initiatives could help sustainably supply part of metropolitan food demand.

 

Urban agriculture is seen not as a replacement for conventional farming, but as a strategic complement to strengthen long-term food security.
