State-of-the-art SDS knowledge now available
The United Nations General Assembly recognized the need to bring together
existing knowledge on the management of sand and dust storms (SDS) – including
forecasting, early warning, source and impact mitigation – to facilitate the
capacity-building of Member States and enhance their preparedness and response
to SDS.

bring together existing knowledge on the management of sand and dust storms
(SDS) – including forecasting, early warning, source and impact mitigation – to
facilitate the capacity-building of Member States and enhance their
preparedness and response to SDS.
The new SDS Compendium will practical guidance for decision
makers which can be adapted locally to reduce the risk and exposure from SDS
events. It provides the necessary evidence base to proactively address SDS
sources and impacts. Given the links between SDS and the environment, natural
resource management, and food production, the SDS Compendium can be used in
conjunction with development activities in affected areas, including integrated
soil and water management practices, as well as cross-sectoral approaches
involving health, industry, education and transport.
