New wheat varieties introduced for Iran’s four climatic zones

Tehran - Iranian agricultural officials have unveiled four new wheat varieties, each specifically bred to thrive in one of the country's distinct climatic zones.

The varieties — named Almas, Shafaq, Kamel, and Zolqadr — were introduced during a visit to the Cereal Research Field of the Seed and Plant Improvement Institute.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and head of the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO), along with the Deputy for Crop Production.

Almas is recommended as a reliable choice for cold region, Shafaq offers strong salinity resistance, Kamel is adapted to the humid conditions of northern Iran, and Zolqadr is suited for the warm climates of the south and is expected to play a key role in enhancing wheat production sustainability.

Officials emphasized the importance of strengthening the link between research and production. According to AREEO, accelerating the transfer of these new varieties to farmers' fields is now a top priority for the Deputy for Crop Production and its research institutes.
