New Quinoa Cultivars Released by the NSRC

New Quinoa Cultivars Released by the NSRC
National Salinity Research Center (NSRC) released two new
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) cultivars named Rahmat and Sadough for the
first time in Iran. These cultivars were presented at the meeting of the
Cultivar Introduction Committee of the Seed and Plant Certification and
Registration Institute (SPCRI) and registered as the new cultivars.
Special Characteristics of Rahmat cultivar are black and
large seed size with homogeneous seed size, early maturity and the least seed
shattering, while Sadough is an early maturity cultivar with higher salinity
tolerance, less saponin and high adaptability to different climate conditions
of Iran.
Introduction of quinoa cultivars has been on the agenda of
the NSRC since 2014 by screening and self-pollination to attain homozygosity of
imported quinoa accessions and evaluation their salinity tolerance under field
conditions. Research on the quinoa breeding and agronomic package are ongoing
projects at the NSRC.
