Kurdistan exports 600 tons of aquatic products annually: Official
Sanandaj — Kurdistan Province produces 5,577 tons of aquatic products annually, with around 600 tons exported to domestic and international markets, according to the head of Kurdistan Agriculture Organization.
Negin Moradnejad said production is carried out through three cold-water fish farming complexes, along with a number of small-scale and individual units, with a combined annual capacity of 5,504 tons.
She added that one cage fish farming unit with an annual production capacity of 50 tons is currently operating in the province.
“In addition, Kurdistan has 10 warm-water fish farms with a total annual capacity of 23 tons, as well as 14 ornamental fish farms.”
Commenting on overall aquaculture output, Moradnejad said warm- and cold-water fish farming units together produce 5,577 tons of various aquatic species each year, a figure that matches the province’s current production capacity.
She also noted that Kurdistan produces an average of 1.22 million ornamental fish annually. “These are supplied to the market by 12 aquaculture units, including two industrial-scale operations and 10 small-scale and home-based units, with the majority of the ornamental fish exported to Iraq.”
