Kurdestan province produces 350,000 tons of potatoes annually
Sanandaj - The northwestern province of Kurdestan produces about 350,000 tons of potatoes each year from roughly 8,500 hectares of farmland, underscoring its key role in Iran’s potato supply, a senior agricultural official said.
Sa’adi Naghshbandi, head of the Kurdestan Agricultural Organization, said the planned establishment of a seed potato association would help organize production, support growers, and strengthen the value chain for this strategic crop.
He noted that potato cultivation is largely concentrated in the eastern plains of the province, particularly in Qorveh and Dehgolan, adding that annual local consumption is estimated at around 70,000 tons, with the remainder distributed nationwide.
Naghshbandi said the organization will back all legal and institutional initiatives aimed at boosting farmers’ incomes, improving production efficiency, and ensuring sustainable development in the sector.
