Tehran – Iran's shrimp production increased by nearly 40% in 2025 after disease outbreaks in the aquaculture sector fell by 37% compared with the previous year, according to the Iran Veterinary Organization.

 

Reza Asadi, Director General of Aquatic Animal Health, Prevention and Disease Management, attributed the gains to stricter biosecurity measures, modernization of hatcheries and shrimp farms, and stronger private sector cooperation.

 

Annual shrimp production rose from 45,000 tons to 62,000 tons, reflecting improved disease control and farm productivity.

 

Asadi said white spot syndrome (WSS) and acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) remain the sector's primary health risks. However, no outbreaks of white spot syndrome have been recorded on Iranian shrimp farms since 2023, and authorities aim to preserve that status through continued biosecurity and veterinary surveillance.

 

Nearly 55% of the country's shrimp farms are currently undergoing structural modernization. Bushehr Province leads the reform program, followed by Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Golestan, and Khuzestan. Officials expect the upgrades to further strengthen production, improve product quality, and enhance Iran's shrimp export capacity.
