Iran’s aquatic output reaches 1.5m tons, IFO chief says

Tehran - Iran’s aquatic production has increased from 32,000 tons in 1979 to 1.5 million tons this year, according to the head of the Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO).

Hamzeh Rostampour said Iran’s arid climate makes expansion of marine-based production a strategic necessity and called for continued investment in the sector.

He highlighted the southern Bushehr Province as a key fisheries hub, noting shrimp output of 30,000 tons and growing marine fish farming capacity.

“Eight fishing port projects are underway in Bushehr this year, alongside private-sector initiatives including large-scale fish fry releases and algae production programs.”

Investment in fisheries and marine infrastructure exceeded 34 trillion tomans in 2024 and has surpassed 69 trillion tomans this year, with about 90 percent funded by the private sector, he added.
